So the Monarch of the Netherlands Queen Beatrix has suggested she will abdicate in April to allow her son to take over the throne. She is seventy-five years old and has held the throne for 33 years. Her son Willem-Alexander will be inaugurated on April the 30th (Dutch royalty is not “crowned” as the position is deemed more of a government job.
This whole affair is interesting in stark contrast to the Royal Family here in the United Kingdom where the question of whether her Majesty Queen Elizabeth would or even should abdicate to make way for Prince Charles. She is in her late eighties and has been on the throne for sixty years. Some have argued that it is an awfully long time for a prince to wait to become king. I for one do not care, I am well and truly on the fence about the royal family. I am neither a royalist or a republican as I can see good arguments on both sides of the argument and I simply do not care enough to take one side or the other. However, it could be argued that it would be a goodwill gesture for the Queen to step aside now seeing as the Prince of Wales is sixty-four years old and is the longest-serving heir apparent in British history having held that title since 1958.
So should the Queen abdicate? Is it a truly viable option? Or should she go on until she passes away?
